It’s been a busy summer for the Delicious team, with not one, but two projects launching (the second we’ll tell you more about next month) as well as various customisations and fixes for clients’ LearnDash and WordPress websites. We also squeezed in a trip to Greece to learn from and network with fellow WordPress professionals from across the continent at WordCamp Europe…
Improving transparency within the NHS funding process for Yorkshire & Humber
Earlier this year, we began a new website for one of our NHS clients, funded by the Department of Health & Social Care. The aim of the website was to make their research funding process more transparent for future funding applicants. The Clinical Research Network for Yorkshire & Humber Impact Mapping website provides information of previously successful funding applications to show potential funding applicants the types of projects that typically gain financial support.
Our role was to create a user-friendly and accessible WordPress site for the client to populate with their own content. We provided training for them to manage adding new projects in the future, using custom post types, custom fields and taxonomies to organise the content into logical categories and allow users to filter the applications by location, strategic priority, organisation and year of award.
Saving a client in the built environment sector “hours of time” in pre-event admin
Hosting over 80 events per year, our client identified that onboarding speakers for each event was taking up a lot of time and involving several people in the process. They have a database of previous speakers from their events so we were able to use this to create custom functionality for them to type in a speaker’s name and search the database to find the relevant speaker information.
If a speaker is already in the database, it populates the speaker bio and event programme, emailing the team to alert them that the speaker has been booked and to contact the speaker’s PA to confirm it’s in their diary. The client then only has to add all this information if the speaker they have booked is new and not on the database. The client is very happy to now have this process streamlined and saving them hours per speaker booking.
Tailoring course content for learners and improving their learning experience
We work with a client in the electrical wholesale industry, who uses LearnDash to deliver sales and technical training to their client base. As a part of this, they offer a free sample course which as an introduction. The free trial covers some of the same content as the paid course, so, to avoid learners who have been introduced to the course via the free material, repeating this when they sign up for the paid for course, we’ve created a rule to skip this section if the learner has previously completed it. This saves the learners time and gives them a better experience of the course.
The Delicious team attend WordCamp Athens
In June, we jetted off to Greece for WordCamp Europe 2023 held in the very hot, but beautiful city of Athens. We were joined by around 2,000 attendees from across the continent and had a jam-packed schedule of talks across three tracks to choose from. It was great to catch up with some familiar faces from the WordPress community and expand our network with other likeminded WordPress developers. Although there have been a few online events, it was a great opportunity to catch up with our friends in the industry at the first major event since the pandemic.
Sheffield Women in Tech lunch
In July, we hosted a bring-your-own-lunch event for the Sheffield arm of Women in Tech. The session was hosted as a roundtable with 9 women in the tech industry in attendance. Topics covered included: marketing yourself, personal development plans and continued learning and working with diverse people. As a newly formed group we also asked what people want to see from future events to bring value. We’re looking forward to getting the next event scheduled for this autumn.
